Today's Asia Brief includes updates on democracy protests in Hong Kong, the fate of hikers stranded on Japan's Ontake Volcano, and ISIS in Malaysia.

Good morning. It’s Monday, September 29, 2014, and this is The Asia Brief.

Hong Kong’s pro-democracy rally heated up over the weekend as thousands took to the streets. Even breaking through barricades and entering government offices. The Hong Kong government has fired tear gas into the crowds, attempting to disperse the gathering.

Mount Ontake, a 3067m volcano in central Japan erupted Saturday. Over 30 hikers were recovered in a state of cardiac and pulmonary arrest.

As the United States led coalition takes on The Islamic State in the Middle East, Malaysia arrested three alleged ISIS fighters as they prepared to leave for Syria.
